Acupuncture is the use of very thin needles, which are inserted into specific points. The practice of acupuncture has been around for over two thousand years and has proven to be very effective especially for pain relief and chronic illness. Acupuncture is used to encourage natural healing by stimulating or balancing the body’s various functions and systems. Upon insertion, the needles stimulate the immune system, blood flow to the area increases, immune system activity is increased and healing is enhanced resulting in reduced pain and improved function.
There are two types of acupuncture performed at Back in Balance. One is Contemporary Medical Acupuncture which is offered by our chiropractors. The focus is more on human anatomy. Needles are inserted along the course of nerve and into muscles and other tissues supplied by these nerves.
The other is a more classical approach used by our Naturopathic Doctor. It is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. The focus is on stimulating the chi or energy, and balancing the yin and yang of the body.
Whichever method is selected, once the needles are inserted, patients are able to lie in a relaxed state. Needles remain in for 10-30 minutes.
