Headaches can be caused by numerous things. With that being said, there are two main categories of headaches to consider. One is called the primary headaches and the other is called secondary headaches.

Primary Headaches

Primary headaches are divided into 3 major types. Migraines, tension-type headache, and cluster headache. These usually have no major or serious underlying cause – although they can be quite debilitating. They also have very different characteristics. These headaches usually develop in childhood or adolescence and can sometimes persist to various degrees throughout your life. These headaches will feel like a headache you’re used to having.

Secondary headaches

Secondary headaches, as the name implies, are usually caused by something external. It could be a vascular disorder, a slip or fall, car accident, medication, or dehydration. One of the common causes of secondary headaches is through your neck or cervical spine and this type of headache is called a cervicogenic headache.

Headaches Chiropractors Commonly Treat

There are 3 major types of headaches that are treated by chiropractors: migraines, tension-type, and cervicogenic. These might seem similar but all of them have different characteristics, triggers, patterns of pain, and different treatments. By conducting an extensive history and physical exam, our chiropractors are able to diagnose the cause of headache and come up with a treatment plan to eliminate it from it’s source. These treatments often include combinations of myofascial release therapy, adjustments, exercises and stretching, and lifestyle modification.
